ONTARIO WORKS

The Ontario Works (OW) Program has been restructured into a centralized delivery system.  Former municipal employees became KDSB employees on March 30, 2009.  The three main offices are located in Kenora, Dryden and Sioux Lookout.  The offices in Kenora and Dryden are open all day; the office in Sioux Lookout is closed for the lunch hour, 12:00 to 1:00.  A schedule for offices in Ignace, Red Lake, Pickle Lake and Ear Falls is provided below.

Restructuring was necessary to optimize the strengths within the various offices and to provide the flexibility required to serve such a large geographical area and fluctuating caseload.

Ontario Works provides financial assistance, ongoing employment assistance and employment supports.  Clients are encouraged to upgrade their literacy skills, finish grade twelve, attend life skills courses, enroll in specialized training courses, participate in community placements, and update their résumés and cover letters, with the assistance and guidance of a trained Case Manager.  Ontario Works provides a resource room in each community for client use while job searching and researching.

Restructuring has not impacted the service provided through the local offices.  In most cases an appointment will be necessary to apply for Ontario Works.  Please drop into the local office or phone the appropriate number listed below to make an appointment.  You will be required to provide some documentation as to your date of birth (birth certificate, baptismal certificate, status card), your last employment, your residency for the past twelve months, your health card, your social insurance number, and your assets.  Call for a complete list of the documentation required.

The KDSB also has funding available for emergency situations when rent and utilities are in arrears.  Applicants are needs tested, meaning that income, assets, family composition, rent and utility costs must be verified before assistance is provided.  Assistance is available for up to two months for rent arrears.  Applicants currently living in subsidized housing units are not eligible for rent assistance.  One time assistance is available for energy arrears.  If you are in danger of becoming homeless due to a disconnection notice or an eviction notice, call one of the Ontario Works offices listed below and inquire about the Emergency Rent and Energy program.

The following schedule will be reviewed and updated as necessary.
